Fundraising February 2022 was a BIG SUCESS with over $200,000 raised!
Thank you so much to everyone who supported the campaign!
We will be building and furnishing the new Well Space at Los Alamitos High School. It will be a calm, comfortable place for students to reset and receive counseling support. LAEF is honored to have previously donated $60,000 to pay for the construction of both middle school Well Spaces and we have seen so many of our students utilizing those spaces.
We are so eager to bring a similar space to LAHS! The goal is to open the space this fall.
Thank you to our amazing sponsors!

We would like to thank everyone who attended or supported our annual Royal Gala in past years. We love this special time with you and sincerely hope to see you at the 2023 LAEF Royal Gala!
LAEF accepts nominations and selects a King and/or Queen to honor and serve as the LAEF royal ambassador for the year!
LAEF’s 2022 King is Dave Appling! He served as President of the Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) from 1995 to 2008.
Dave began supporting LAEF fundraising efforts to modernize and create the Performing Arts Center at Los Alamitos High School (LAHS) in the mid to late 1980s. Dave also supported efforts to pass school bond Measure K in 1990 to improve and maintain school facilities.
In 1995, Dave launched a fundraising campaign in partnership with then-Superintendent Mike Miller, LAHS Assistant Principal Ralph Opacic and 31 community leaders to raise $1.5 million for technology improvements across the district. It took three years, but they successfully raised $750,000 in parent and local business support, which was matched by the state to meet the fundraising goal.
In the mid 2000’s, Dave took on a second successful fundraising campaign, in partnership with LAHS principals, to raise $300,000 to support technology across the LAHS campus, including the new two-story building.
Following this campaign, Dave worked with the district to keep LAEF’s 501(c)3 active until passing the baton to new leadership in 2008. In 2017, Dave was appointed as a LAEF Board Member Emeritus and continues to serve in this capacity.
Beyond LAEF, Dave has supported the community in many ways. He was the President/Founder of the LAHS Football Foundation, raising over $180,000 to date in scholarship funds. He served on the Los Alamitos Youth Center Board from 1987-2011 and was President twice in 1992 and 1997/98. He was Director of the Rotary Interact Club at LAHS from 1983 to 1987 and was a member of both the LAHS Vocational Advisory Committee and LAUSD Advisory Council.
David was awarded Los Alamitos Chamber “Man of the Year” in 1994, Cypress College Americana “Citizen of the Year Los Alamitos 1999″ and Los Alamitos Museum “Citizen of the Year 2013.” David’s past affiliations include Coach/Board Member at St. Hedwig Little League/Pony/Colt/Thoroughbred League and LAYAA Football and Basketball Leagues.
David and his wife, Diane reside in Cypress, California. They lived in Los Alamitos from 1969 to 2002. Their three sons all attended Los Alamitos Elementary, Pine Middle School and graduated from LAHS. Two of their five grandchildren went to Lee Elementary, Oak Middle School and graduated from LAHS.
